MedImpact Health Outcomes Team Earns JMCP 2014 Award for Best Paper

Is there an association between the high-risk medication (HRM) Star Ratings and member experience Star Ratings measures? This has become a topic of debate among MedImpact clients and other members of the healthcare industry. Methods to achieve high Star Ratings for the high-risk medication measure are thought to compromise several member experience measures that ultimately put at risk a plan sponsor’s Medicare Part D Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) Star Ratings.

Hearing the concerns of our clients, MedImpact’s Health Outcomes Research team began a study, with Sara Erickson, PharmD, serving as lead researcher and author of the study.

The results of the study were included in an article titled “Is There an Association Between the High-Risk Medication Star Ratings and Member Experience CMS Star Ratings Measures?” published in the November 2014 issue of the Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy (JMCP) and subsequently awarded the 2014 JMCP Award for Excellence for Best Paper earlier this year.

The article was selected by a panel of JMCP peer reviewers using the following criteria (with accompanying percentage weight):

  • Potential impact on the profession or knowledge (30%)
  • Scientific merit and sound methodology (30%)
  • Relevance to managed care pharmacy today (20%)
  • Clarity of purpose and hypothesis (10%)
  • Writing quality and readability (10%)

Drs. Sara Erickson, R. Scott Leslie and Bimal V. Patel were honored at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy's Annual Awards Dinner during AMCP’s 27th Annual Meeting & Expo April 8, 2015, in San Diego.

Results of this study indicate that the HRM Star Rating measure score and its improvement, prior to the implementation of the updated 2012 AGS Beers Criteria, have minimal influence on the member experience Star Ratings measure scores. This information may be used by plan sponsors in making informed decisions regarding HRM utilization management and maximizing CMS Star Ratings performance.
